JAN BERRY
Jan Berry was born and raised in Lloydminster. Her roots are from
three longtime Lloydminster families the Berrys, Phillips & McGales.
Music has always been a part of Jan's life and through the support and
encouragement of people like Barb Lorenz, Eileen Yaxley, Patrick Hoenmans and Gladys Jack. Jan was able to obtain a solid
foundation in
many aspects of music. In 1993, she won the General Motors of Canada Award of
Excellence at Musicfest 93. Upon completion of grade 12 from the Lloydminster
Comprehensive High School, Jan was accepted into the Bachelor of Music program
at the University of Alberta. Under the guidance of Dr. William Street, Jan
received various music and academic scholarships, was on the Dean's Honor List
for four consecutive years and graduated from the U of A with Distinction in
1997. Jan also received the Gold Medal from the Faculty of Arts for outstanding
academic achievement upon graduating. Over the past several years, she has had
the opportunity to travel abroad and study with masters in her area of
expertise, the saxophone.
In the summer of 1995, Jan won the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship for
Advanced Study of Music in Austria. For two months she studied with the Vienna
Saxophone Quartet in Vienna and with Dr. Eugene Rousseau in Salzburg. In the
summer of 1996, Jan toured southern France with the Edmonton Wind Sinfonia,
performed in several concerts and studied with the world-renowned saxophonist,
Jean-Marie Londeix at the Bordeaux Conservatory. In the spring of 1997, Jan was
a member of the U of A Saxophone Quartet that auditioned for and participated in
the annual Fischoff Competition in South Bend, Indiana.
Jan is currently attending Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and
under
the guidance of master saxophonist, Dr. Fredrick she will
graduate in June, 1998 with a Masters of Music degree in saxophone performance.
She will enter the Doctorate program at Northwestern in the fall of 1999.
